History
Clackmannanshire’s ‘Tower Trail’ represents just a few of the great medieval towers and castles in the county, built by aristocrats who needed to be near the royal court in Stirling. The imposing Castle Campbell overlooks the county above Dollar, whilst the nearby Japanese Gardens at Cowden are globally recognised. The echoes of the origins of industrial modern distilling can be found here, nestled by the Forth at Kennetpans.
The Great Outdoors
Thanks to its central location, Clackmannanshire offers a wide range of outdoor activities that include mountain-biking, canyoning, hiking and golfing. The dramatic face of the Ochil Hills is the backdrop to the whole county and offers access, via our outstanding active travel network, to a range of activities in some of the most beautiful scenery in Scotland.
Art & Design
The county’s rich heritage and natural beauty have provided a source of inspiration for many artists. Andy Scott, the internationally renowned sculptor of the Kelpies, has created an impressive concentration of works in the area while other public art installations by sculptors such as Russel Lamb and Michael Visocchi are on display.
Science & Engineering
Clackmannanshire has a wealth of industrial, scientific and engineering marvels. Gartmorn Dam is an iconic artificial loch created in the early 18th century for industry and now a nature reserve. The Clackmannanshire Bridge is a marvel of modern engineering, linking the county with the national motorway network. In the grounds of the O-I glassworks is the last brick glass cone in Scotland, a relic of the glassmaking industry in Alloa. There are many more sights to see in the Wee County.
